[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1529323588484{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]Last Sunday, 13 May, we celebrated the World Migratory Bird Day! On that occasion, MES organised birdwatching tours in the Skopje City Park. This presented great opportunity for the people of Skopje to get to know the avifauna in the city’s green getaway. The interest was great, with tour vacancies instantly gone. In addition, people taking part expressed their wish that such tours be conducted on a regular basis.
The World Migratory Bird Day is an initiative ensuing from the Convention on Migratory Species and the African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbird Agreement.

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1529394075509{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]On the Stork Day, celebrated each year by the Municipality of Cheshinovo-Obleshevo, we visited the completed birdwatching tower offering view of the magnificent rice paddy fields. The birdwatching tower represents yet another step by which the Macedonian Stork Village reaffirms its mission to conserve the densest population of white stork. During our visit to the tower we also donated two binoculars to be used by local schools and other visitors to the birdwatching tower. • Celebrating five years of PrespaNet

    Celebrating five years of PrespaNet

On 29 March 2018, the Macedonian Ecological Society, the Society for the Protection of Prespa from Greece and the Protection and Preservation of Natural Environment in Albania celebrated the fifth anniversary of the day when the three organisations of transboundary Prespa established PrespaNet, an NGO network for the protection of the Prespa watershed. On this occasion, emphasis was put on the need for the three countries to act in unison on its protection. Throughout the years, the organisations have managed to establish close cooperation towards reaching their goals, working together on a transboundary strategy for Prespa, which includes water management, joint monitoring of species, lobbying for the use of sustainable approaches, and also raising public awareness.

This anniversary was marked by the new project for the conservation of Prespa funded by PONT and the Aage V. Jensen Foundations, which encompasses wetland conservation, plant and large mammal monitoring, and it also includes many opportunities for active involvement in environmental protection. We are turning over a new leaf for PrespaNet and helping to build sustainable future for Prespa!

  • Our new look!

    Our new look!

After more than 45 years of existence and work in nature protection and promotion of ecological science, we decided that it was high time to refresh our logo and modernise our website. We do hope that changing the organisation’s image will bring us closer to the citizens and the members. Therefore, as of today, 22 April – Earth Day, until 22 May – International Day for Biological Diversity, MES annual membership will be free of charge.

For decades now such international days bear significance to us, for we remain firmly dedicated to exploring and conserving nature, as well as bringing it closer to the Macedonian citizens.

Our new look starts from the new logo selected from the several suggestions by a few Macedonian designers active on the Facebook page named Creative exchange. The logo was developed by the designer Vladimir Trajanovski from Ohrid. The process of approving the final idea took more than a year, whereas it has retained all elements of the old logo but in a very stylised manner. The new logo, much like the old one, depicts the integral functioning of the biosphere, combining the soil, water, sun and vegetation, but this time with softer lines, clearness and simplicity.

This year MES became a fully-fledged member of BirdLife International, the oldest and the largest global NGO network for nature conservation established in 1922, which brings together organisations from more than 120 countries with more than 13 million members and supporters.

  • Introductory workshop for the third part of the “Connecting People with Nature” project

Introductory workshop for the third part of the “Connecting People with Nature” project

The Macedonian Ecological Society in cooperation with PlantLife, an NGO from Great Britain, and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) continued implementing the project named “Connecting People with Nature – Strengthening and Networking of Civil Society in Macedonia” by involving Macedonian citizens as volunteers in nature conservation and undertaking activities instrumental to the implementation of EU regulations relevant for the introduction of the Natura 2000 network.

The project is an ambitious initiative to protect wild plants in the countries of Southeastern Europe, with focus on the Mediterranean. Through Plantlife and IUCN combined experience, a total of eleven organisations from eleven countries from the abovementioned region are making efforts to transfer knowledge and experience at national level as regards important plant species and their habitats.

During the project, all partners will undertake activities to protect plants within twenty Important Plant Areas (IPAs) in six countries (Morocco, Algeria, Lebanon, Montenegro, Turkey and Macedonia) by including a large number of citizens, associations, research institutions and other stakeholders.

The project in Macedonia will be implemented in the duration of eighteen months with activities covering the following areas: Dojran, Bogdanci, Prespa, and Ilinska Mountain.

In that respect, Skopje on 25-26 November hosted an introductory workshop attended by representatives from organisations, institutuions and volunteers, from the selected IPAs. “Art Point – Gumno” from Sloeshtica (IPA of Ilinska Mountain), “Action Plus” from Resen (IPA of Prespa Lake), “Polimat 13” from Bogdanci (IPA of Bogdanci), “Renatura” from Dojran (IPA of Dojran Lake) are the organisations taking part in this project. Moreover, complete support was provided by several institutions, such as primary and high schools from from Demir Hisar (Brakja Miladinovci Primary School and Krste P. Misirkov High School), the Municipality of Resen, and by volunteers from the selected areas.

In the following thirteen months these organisations and institutions will be involved in activities towards popularisation and affirmation of their respective IPAs. Also, monitoring activities of given plant species important both at national and international level will be conducted.

  • 2017 World Wetlands Day

    2017 World Wetlands Day

Today we mark the World Wetlands Day!

Each year, the Ramsar Convention celebrates this day with an event that includes various games and activities. This year several messages were prepared and sent through the following video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dDnokfpEiz4 along with an interesting cartoon!

MES celebrated the day with an educational event in Prespa. Together with the pupils of the Goce Delchev Primary School we quizzed our knowledge about wetlands and found out how they shield us from natural disasters.
