The main goal of the Agroecology Programme is the conservation of high nature value farming, that is, the preservation of traditional or extensive farming conductive to the conservation of agrobiodiversity (heirloom varieties) and landscape. Unfortunately, owing to the need for increased yield, agricultural production is becoming increasingly intensive. Agroecosystems have an adverse impact on the environment and nature, whereas, the more developed and intensive the farming, the greater its adverse impact on nature – hence the greater the pollution of groundwater and the loss of habitats and the flora and fauna. There is also the direct effect of ecosystem degradation arising from land use. In addition to the scientific work the programme also focuses on raising public awareness of farmers and other concerned parties.
