    International Vulture Awareness Day in the Skopje ZOO

    On September 7th the Macedonian Ecological Society in collaboration with the Biology Students’ Research Society held a celebration for the International Vulture Awareness Day in the Skopje ZOO. The event was held under the “Egyptian Vulture New Life” project. The purpose of the event was to raise awareness and educate the public about the European Vultures and the efforts made to protect them.

    The visitors had an opportunity, through participatory activities meant for all ages, to learn play games and test their knowledge about vultures. Our youngest guests expressed the most enthusiasm. The event went with lots of games and laughter, and most important, with new friendships made.

    Annual membership meeting

    The annual membership meeting is a predecessor to the meetings of our Presidency and the Assembly. This time the meeting was held on January 10th at the MKC Restaurant. The members were greeted by our President, Professor Slavcho Hristovski, PhD. and the Executive Director Robertina Brajanoska, MSc, but we were especially honored by the speech given by out Founder Ljupcho Grupche, PhD.

    During the membership meeting we once again thanked and honored our Nature Heroes, Emanuel Lisichanec for his work on vulture conservation and Violeta Janeva on her visionary support of the Stork Village in Macedonia. This prestigious award was given to both our members by the President of BirdLife.  

    The membership meeting is also the forum where our members can find out more about the projects we are developing, the programs we support and to influence our work through the membership delegate who is a member of our Assembly.

  • Need to Establish Large Carnivore Platform in the Balkans

    Around fifty representatives from the region and from other European countries took part in the first regional meeting of the EU Platform on Coexistence between People and Large Carnivores in the Dinaric region, held in Budva, Montenegro on 6 November 2018. Participants affirmed the importance of the Platform in establishing transboundary cooperation, exchanging experiences, and conducting joint management of large carnivore populations.

    The Dinaric-Pindos mountain range is among the richest European regions as far as the biodiversity is concerned, and it is home to the brown bear, grey wolf and Eurasian lynx. The representatives of the meeting concluded that the Dinaric platform will be a unique example for joint management of the large carnivore population in 10 different countries, something that exceptional to Europe.

    The meeting was organised by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF – Adria), IUCN, Large Carnivore Initiative for Europe, Parks Dinarides, The Center for Protection and Research of Birds in Montenegro and EuroNatur.

    Birdwatching in the Park on the World Migratory Bird Day

On that occasion, MES organised birdwatching tours in the Skopje City Park. This presented great opportunity for the people of Skopje to get to know the avifauna in the city’s green getaway. The interest was great, with tour vacancies instantly gone. In addition, people taking part expressed their wish that such tours be conducted on a regular basis.
    The World Migratory Bird Day is an initiative ensuing from the Convention on Migratory Species and the African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbird Agreement.

    Stork Day – a bird’s eye view of the rice paddy fields

    [vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1529394075509{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]On the Stork Day, celebrated each year by the Municipality of Cheshinovo-Obleshevo, we visited the completed birdwatching tower offering view of the magnificent rice paddy fields. The birdwatching tower represents yet another step by which the Macedonian Stork Village reaffirms its mission to conserve the densest population of white stork. During our visit to the tower we also donated two binoculars to be used by local schools and other visitors to the birdwatching tower.     2017 World Wetlands Day

    Today we mark the World Wetlands Day!

    Each year, the Ramsar Convention celebrates this day with an event that includes various games and activities. This year several messages were prepared and sent through the following video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dDnokfpEiz4 along with an interesting cartoon!

    MES celebrated the day with an educational event in Prespa. Together with the pupils of the Goce Delchev Primary School we quizzed our knowledge about wetlands and found out how they shield us from natural disasters.

    2017 Skopje Green Belt Day

    The Skopje City Park’s Central Park Cafe hosted the celebration of the Green Belt Day on 24 September 2017 with various activities and a themed photo exhibition. Through interactive games MES helped the youth learn about the life of the lynx, the insects, birds and trees.

    Our country, as part of the European Green Belt initiative, for a second year in a row marks this important day and raises the public awareness of citizens regarding the rich areas under the Balkan Green Belt.

    The European Green Belt initiative strives towards the conservation of Europe’s important areas, having been kept due to the reduced movement during the Cold War.

    On 20 December 2017, MES organised an Annual Membership Meeting in the Macedonian Museum of Natural History in Skopje.

    The meeting marked the 45 years of Society’s existence. On this occasion, MES presented achievements, obstacles and future steps.

    Ponikva, 16 May 2015, hosted the 2015 MES Annual Membership Meeting.

    On this occasion, members were informed about Society’s current activities and news, especially about those conducted by MES on Osogovo Mountains.

    As part of the gathering, a visit to the educational Woodpecker Trail.

    5th Congress of Ecologists of Macedonia with International Participation, Ohrid 2016

    In the period 19–22 October 2016 in Ohrid, MES held the 5th Congress of Ecologists of Macedonia with International Participation. This gathering was attended by more than 300 participants and guests from 13 European countries. Around 250 participants from the region presented their findings and achievements ensuing from the scientific work conducted in the field of ecological science within the nine working sections established.

    The Congress also included a Round Table on Domestic Animal Diversity in the Balkans and a Symposium of the Biology Students’ Research Society. The Congress programme was enriched by a children’s photo exhibition in the context of the eco competition, whereas out of the 545 photos sent by more than 220 pupils aged second to ninth grade from 70 primary schools in Macedonia, three photos were voted best. In the meantime, there was a projection of several documentaries filmed within national projects and programmes in Macedonia.

    Twenty-four of the papers presented were published in the Proceedings of the 5th Congress of Ecologists of Macedonia with International Participation.
