2nd February, the Water Habitats\u2019 day, could be especially lucky for a young female golden eagle. Mr. Samoil Ilioski found this bird in a very bad condition, it was barely moving, its legs were contorted and it could not fly. He gave the bird to the border police in the village Vitolishte. Almost immediately, the information about this large bird of prey reached to the Jarak society (Association for Protection and Breeding Birds of Prey), the MOT (Macedonian Owl Trust) society for owl conservation and the Macedonian Ecological Society MES. Due to the great bird\u2019s life risk, members and partners of MES on 03rd February 2103 took the bird to Skopje where it received immediate veterinary treatment in \u201cVeterinary Center\u201d. MOT is taking care of the eagle, where it receives the suitable care. After the veterinary control, it has been concluded that the one year old female bird does not have external wounds and is in good physical condition, that is, it is not shot or sick. The symptoms showed that the bird has been contaminated with pesticides and lead. The Department for Environment has been immediately notified, as well as the State Inspectorate for Environment and Nature.<\/p>\n

On 4th February 2013 the bird was taken to the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, where there were x-ray tests performed on it. Blood was taken for estimation of lead concentration and it was immediately taken to the Institute for Biology at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences in Skopje. Unfortunately, the results were positive \u2013 the lead concentration was 2.4mg\/l, and the referential amounts for an acute contamination are 1mg\/l. Having in mind that the test does not show the lead balls, the possible conclusion is that the unlucky bird has found shot and dead or wounded individual of some species of game and either completely digested the lead balls or they have been hurled up.
\nEven though the bird receives the needed therapy, its condition is still critical and it will take a longer period of time until it recovers. After the condition is better, the bird will be taken to isolation in the Skopje Zoo, and then hopefully taken back to Mariovo.<\/p>\n

This is the first noted case in Macedonia of a bird of prey being contaminated with lead. This problem has already been discerned in the western countries, but in many countries hunting with lead balls is forbidden. In Macedonia the problem is probably seriously underestimated, and the secondary lead poisoning can lead to decreasing the number of other endangered species of birds of prey. In addition, this case reminds us of another problem with the wounded individuals of untamed species in Macedonia \u2013 lack of specialized and equipped rescue center for these kinds of animals.<\/p>\n
