One of MES’s most important roles at a national level is the provision of expert support to relevant government institutions through direct involvement during the preparation of or giving advice about various strategic documents and legislation on nature and environment protection. Programme activities include analysing the harmonisation with the EU acquis, strengthening the capacities of different stakeholders, and also providing scientific data and expert support in the implementation of obligations arising from the acquis in the area of nature protection (especially referring to the two most significant EU directives on birds and habitats). Within this programme, MES also took active participation in the revision of the national Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (BSAP) and the preparation of the Fifth National Report to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). We are also involved in the preparation and adoption of strategic and planning documents from other relevant areas (such as Strategy for Organic Production, and Environmental and Climate Change Strategy), and also offer comments and proposals for amendments to relevant laws and bylaws. MES has participated in the work of the IPARD Monitoring Committee ever since 2011. The programme is also closely related the MES’s remaining programmes.
